First Grade Lesson Plan: Earth Science

Science Standard: The sun warms the land, air, and water.

Grade Level: First

Objective: By the end of the day, students will understand the warming effect the sun has on land, air and water by doing an experiment using these elements. Students will also be able to observe measurable changes in surrounding land, air, and water using past and present target vocabulary.

Assessment: Students will be assessed through group discussion, and written observations using target vocabulary.

Target Vocabulary: cold, cool, warm, hot, shadow, frozen, condensation.

Materials: clear plastic cups, permanent markers, use of a freezer, ice, thermometer, (optional).

Introduction: Students will activate prior knowledge about the sun, weather, temperature, and vocabulary.

Input:
Content: 1) I will: -Introduce new vocabulary, which will be written on the board, pronounced by me and, repeated by the students.
-Explain briefly the different states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas citing examples.

Guided Practice:
Content: Students will be given a cup with their name on it filled with ice. Students will then be taken outside to observe the temperature of the air, and a selected object on the playground. The cups will then be placed outside of the classroom in direct sunlight. Checks For Understanding: The students will discuss their observations, and write down using new vocabulary those observations.

Student Practice:
Content: Students will again observe the temperature of the cups, playground equipment, and air. These observations should be taken at noon (before lunch), and again before the end of class.
Checks For Understanding: These observations will be written, and discussed after each trip outside.

Assessment: 1. I will guide three short class discussions by asking questions about the student’s observations: What do you think warmed the objects outside? Does the sun warm objects, or cool objects? What different types of things does the sun warm? What things does the sun help? What if it is sunny all day long? 2. Students will draw a picture from their observations taken over the course of the day.

Closure:
Content: I will explain and assign homework (students are to fill out work sheet provided). A list of new vocabulary words will be provided also.
